THP Student Joins Scientific Joy Cruise Aboard the Tan Kah Kee Research Vessel

Omar, a student from the Department of Aquatic Product Technology (THP), IPB University, had the opportunity to participate in an international training program entitled Scientific Joy Cruise with the Tan Kah Kee Research Vessel of Xiamen University. This program was a collaboration between the International Maritime, Marine, and Fisheries Research Institute (LRI i-MAR) of IPB University and Xiamen University (XMU), China.
The training took place during a four-day voyage from Tanjung Priok, Jakarta to Port Klang Cruise Terminal, Malaysia. More than 30 scientists and students from various institutions joined the program, which is part of SEA-BIRD (Science, Education, and Adventure on Board).
Academic Mission and International Collaboration

Prof. Luky Adrianto, Head of i-MAR IPB University and person in charge of the event, emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing global challenges in marine sciences. He stated that this activity strengthens bilateral relations through academic exchanges and direct knowledge transfer aboard the international research vessel.
The Rector of IPB University also expressed hope that Indonesia will one day have a high-quality research vessel like the Tan Kah Kee, which can continuously support advanced marine research.
Learning Onboard
Selama pelayaran, para peserta dibekali materi terkait keselamatan dan etika berlayar, penggunaan alat pelindung diri (APD), hingga pengenalan sistem pengoperasian kapal. Mereka juga mengikuti kuliah singkat dari pakar kelautan IPB University dan mitra, serta materi khusus dari kru kapal, TNI AL, dan BRIN.
The program concluded with student presentations reflecting their experiences and key learnings throughout the journey.

Omar’s participation in this international program is a source of pride for the Department of THP, IPB University. Beyond enriching student competencies, this experience broadens international academic networks and supports IPB University’s vision to strengthen global collaboration in marine, fisheries, and aquatic product sciences.
