Prof. Kustiariyah memiliki keahlian dalam bidang Bioteknologi Kelautan, fokus risetnya mencakup bioteknologi fungi dan bioteknologi alga. Penelitiannya mencakup isolasi, karakterisasi, dan aplikasi fungi laut serta mikro dan makroalga, terutama dalam menghasilkan senyawa bernilai tambah seperti pigmen alami. Pengembangan yang dilakukan diarahkan pada produk pangan dan minuman fungsional, kosmeseutika berbasis invertebrata dan rumput laut, serta biostimulan ramah lingkungan.
