Diah Anggraini as Delegation of Indonesia in ASEAN-Korea Youth Programme Network
Marine Conservation – Promoting the Sustainable Use of Coastal and Marine Resources, 1-4 August 2016, Korea
- BACKGROUND
With a coastline of 173,000 km, ASEAN has arguably the most abundant and diverse natural marine resources in the world. The region houses 35% of the world’s mangrove forests and about 30% of the coral reefs while producing 14% of the world’s marine fish products.1 These resources are essential to sustaining the ASEAN economy, particularly to the Coastal Forestry, Fisheries, Industry, and Coastal Tourism sectors. However, the non of marine resources in ASEAN have led to grave environmental degradation. While overfishing and destructive fishing methods have resulted in coral bleaching and extinction of other marine life, waste mismanagement and massive tourist developments in coastal areas, beyond existing carrying capacity, have generated massive amounts of water pollutants.
In order to achieve sustainable marine and economic development, the ASEAN highlights promotion of capacity building in a continuous effort to have sustainable management of ecosystems and natural resources in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Communit Blue print.
Recognizing the importance of marine resources and its sustainable use as well as acting as a platform for the dialogue between the ASEAN Member States and the ROK, the The ASEAN-Korea Center will invite ASEAN and Korean students, who are the future leaders of the ASEAN and Korea, to gather at the 2016 ASEAN-Korea Youth Network Workshop to enhance their understanding on marine conservation and forge strong friendship among them. Under the theme of Marine Conservation – Promoting the Sustainable Use of Coastal and Marine Resources, the Workshop will be from 1-4 August 2016, including lectures, discussions, and site visits in Korea.
