Golden Snail “The Rice Pest” for Cosmetic Ingredients
Golden snail eggs can be used as ingredients for cosmetics. Research by Professors of the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Prof. Dr. Nurjanah and Dr. Asadatun Abdullah along with their students found these benefits.
Golden snails are freshwater snails originating from South America. So far, golden snails have been categorized as serious rice plant pests and are difficult to eradicate. This is due to their high adaptability, so they can live in various types of habitats and their high reproductive capacity. “In the past, golden snails were initially enemies of farmers. Golden snails can finish off rice in a short time in hectares,” explained Nurjanah as conveyed in an IPB press release, Wednesday (11/10).
Golden snail eggs themselves have attractive colors as a source of natural pigments. To produce golden snail pigments, Dr. Asadatun Abdullah extracted golden snail eggs using polar and semi-polar solvents with certain pre-treatments. The resulting pigment extract has a very attractive and bright color. “The hope is that the pigment produced has the potential to be applied as a natural dye rich in antioxidants, especially in the field of cosmetics which will be studied further,” he explained.
The content of golden snail eggs has the potential to be used as raw materials for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical drugs. The antioxidants contained in golden snails are efficacious in preventing free radicals. Research partner Dr. Asadatun Abdullah, Prof. Nurjanah also added that empirically by giving golden snails to fish and is better in terms of development and growth. This also happens to chickens and ducks.
In the future, Dr. Asadatun Abdullah together with Prof. Nurjanah will continue to develop pigments from golden snails which are pests for farmers, but it turns out to have many health benefits. “Further development is still needed which of course will produce further innovations,” said Dr. Asadatun.
